Check your home network: what is on your Wi-Fi?

Most homes have far more devices on Wi-Fi than anyone realizes. Here is how to get a complete picture in ten minutes – straight from your router, no extra software.

Cameras, robot vacuums, TVs, old tablets: an average home now has twenty or more devices on Wi-Fi. Every one of them is a possible way in, and most have not been looked at since the day they were set up. Getting the overview is the basis for everything else.

The short version

  • The device list lives in your router – you do not need a scanner app.
  • Account for everything. Anything you cannot explain does not belong on your network.
  • Put smart home gear on the guest network – it is rarely up to date.
  • Old devices with no updates get separated or retired.
  • The router itself is the most important device on the list.

Step 1: open the list

Finding the device list

  • ISP gateway (Xfinity, Spectrum, Fios, AT&T): use the provider’s app, or open http://192.168.1.1 or http://10.0.0.1 in a browser.
  • Mesh systems (eero, Google Nest Wifi, Orbi, Deco): the list is in the manufacturer’s app, not in a browser.
  • Standalone router (Netgear, TP-Link, Asus, Ubiquiti): the address is printed on the sticker underneath the unit.
  • Show inactive devices too if the interface offers the option – that is where forgotten hardware hides.

As you go, note the name, the device type and the last connection for each entry. Those three details are what you need in the next step.

Step 2: identify the unknowns

Most mysteries resolve harmlessly. Work through them systematically:

  • Read the name: many devices announce their maker or model (“HP-Printer”, “echo-xyz”).
  • Check the MAC address: the first six characters identify the manufacturer. A quick search usually settles it.
  • The power-off test: switch a suspected device off. If the entry disappears from the list, you have identified it.
  • The block test: if an entry stays unclear, revoke its access in the router and wait a few days. If nobody in the household complains, it was not important.
Found a device that really is not yours? Then your Wi-Fi password is compromised. Change the Wi-Fi password and the router admin password right away – they must be different from each other and both strong. Every one of your own devices will need to reconnect afterwards.

Step 3: clean up

Sort what you find into three groups:

Devices that no longer receive security updates are the real problem in a home network. An IP camera that has not had firmware in years stays permanently exploitable, no matter how good your Wi-Fi password is.

Step 4: separate the smart home

Set up a guest network and move every smart home device onto it. The effect: they still reach the internet, but they can no longer reach your computers, network drives and backups. If one of them is taken over, the damage stays contained.

On most routers this is three clicks under “Guest network.” The setting that matters is the one isolating devices from each other – often called client isolation or AP isolation.

One question per device

Ask exactly one thing about every entry: does this device still get security updates? If the answer is no, it belongs on the guest network or off the network entirely – no matter how well it still works.

Step 5: secure the router itself

The router protects everything else, and it is the device most often left on factory settings. The four things that matter:

  • Change the admin password (not the same as the Wi-Fi password).
  • Turn on automatic firmware updates.
  • Switch off remote administration from the internet unless you actually need it.
  • Use WPA3, or WPA2 at minimum, and turn WPS off.

How often?

Once a year is enough – plus whenever new devices have moved in, you have shared the Wi-Fi password, or the network gets noticeably slower.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I see every device on my Wi-Fi?

In your router’s admin page, usually under Network, Connected Devices or Attached Devices. Most ISP gateways and mesh systems show the same list in their phone app, which is often easier to read.

A device has a cryptic name – is that dangerous?

Usually not. Plenty of devices report a string of characters instead of a real name: smart TVs, printers, voice assistants. Identify it from the manufacturer portion of its MAC address. If it stays unclear, block it for a few days and see what stops working.

Do I need a guest network?

It is worth it for visitors, and even more so for smart home gear. Those devices rarely get updates. On the guest network they cannot reach your computers and network drives, so a break-in stays contained.
