Test your tracking protection: how unique is your browser?
Ad networks recognize you without cookies, from the combination of your browser settings. Here is how to test your protection for free – and how to read the results.
Blocking cookies was yesterday’s problem. Modern ad networks recognize you from the sum of technical details your browser gives away anyway. The good news: you can measure how distinctive you are in a few minutes, and check the effect of every change directly.
The short version
- Fingerprinting works without cookies and cannot be switched off with a single click.

- Less is more: many extensions make you more distinctive, not more invisible.
- A VPN is not tracking protection – it protects the connection, not your recognizability.

The three tests
Measure it yourself in ten minutes
- 1. Fingerprint test: check how unique your browser is, and whether trackers are blocked, at coveryourtracks.eff.org from the Electronic Frontier Foundation.
- 2. DNS leak test: open dnsleaktest.com – with a VPN running, your internet provider’s server must not appear there.
- 3. Before and after: change one setting, then test again. That is the only way to see what actually works.
Use a fresh window with no active logins for the test. Otherwise you are measuring the fact that you are signed in somewhere, not your actual protection.

What actually helps
In order, from biggest effect to smallest:
- Use a browser with protection built in. The single most effective step.
- Turn the protection settings up: strict tracking protection, block third-party cookies.
- Few, good extensions instead of many. One solid content blocker is enough.
- Separate your profiles: one for work, one for personal, one for shopping.
- Use alias email addresses, so your address does not act as the link between services.
What tracking protection cannot do
As long as you sign in to a service, that service knows who you are – regardless of browser, add-on or VPN. Tracking protection limits what other people learn about you. It does not make you anonymous to the provider itself.The special case: private mode
Private or incognito mode only clears local traces on your device: history, cookies, form data. To websites you are still the same browser with the same fingerprint. It is good for keeping a shared device tidy. It is not tracking protection.
How often should you test?
Once after any significant change to your browser or extensions, otherwise once a year. Browser updates change protection regularly – sometimes for the better, sometimes by resetting your settings.

What is a browser fingerprint?
The combination of details your browser hands over on every page load: screen size, time zone, language, fonts, graphics hardware and more. Individually they say nothing about you. Together they often form an ID that recognizes you across sites without any cookie.
Do more extensions make my browser safer?
Not necessarily. Every extra extension makes your browser more distinctive, and therefore easier to recognize. Two or three good ones beat ten – and a browser with protection built in is usually the simpler answer.
Does a VPN protect against tracking?
Only partly. A VPN hides your IP address from websites and from your internet provider. Cookies, logins and your fingerprint are untouched. Tracking protection comes from browser settings; a VPN protects the connection. Neither replaces the other.
