1. Default passwords are the biggest gap
Many devices arrive with passwords like “admin” or “1234” – and attackers have those lists. On every new device, change the default password immediately, both on the device and in its app. Use a unique password for each one from your password manager .
2. Updates keep the firmware sound
IoT devices get updates less often than a phone or computer – but when they do, those updates often close serious holes. Turn on automatic firmware updates in the app, and retire devices the manufacturer no longer supports at all.
3. Separating the network protects everything else

4. Choose remote access and features deliberately
Do you really need to reach that camera while you are out? Turn remote access on only when you need it, and protect the manufacturer account with two-factor authentication . Switch off microphones, cameras or cloud storage you do not use – what is off cannot be misused.
