VPN glossary
The terms this archive uses, each with what it means here and the figure the archive currently counts for it.
- Compatible
The result of a measurement in which no reply rules the listed country out and the closest reply places the server near that country. It is not proof: the server could still stand just across the border.
62 of 106 measured locations are compatible.
- Endpoint
The published host name or address of a server that an app connects to. It is what the site measures. The address your traffic leaves from can be a different one and is not published by the lists.
The lists name 34,953 servers in all.
- First term
The period a first payment covers, including any bonus months. The advertised monthly price of a long plan applies to this period only.
48 collected offers state a price for the time after the first term.
- Five, Nine and Fourteen Eyes
Names for circles of countries whose intelligence services share what they collect: five countries at the core, nine and fourteen with further members.
517 of 1,661 listed locations lie in Five Eyes countries.
- Geoblocking
A website answering differently, or not at all, depending on the country a request comes from.
- Incompatible
The result of a measurement in which several independent probes received replies too fast for the listed country. The server cannot stand where the list places it.
7 of 106 measured locations are incompatible.
- IP address
The number your connection is reachable under. Every website you open learns it, and with it roughly where you are and which network you use.
- Latency (round-trip time)
The time a small packet needs to reach a server and come back, in milliseconds. Because nothing travels faster than light in fibre, a round-trip time sets an upper limit on how far away the server can be.
The site allows 100 km per millisecond of round-trip time: a reply after 10 ms cannot come from farther away than 1,000 km.
- Location
One entry of a provider's server list: a city or region in a country, with one or more servers behind it. The site counts locations as the list gives them and files each under the country the list names.
The 13 providers list 1,661 locations in 177 countries.
- Network (autonomous system)
The operator that announces a server's address on the internet, identified by an AS number. It is usually the hosting company whose data centre and lines the VPN provider rents.
The published endpoints sit in 131 networks.
- No statement possible
The result of a measurement in which no reply rules the listed country out, but no probe stands near enough to place the server. A slow reply fits many places, so nothing is said either way.
For 37 of 106 measured locations no statement is possible.
- Outside service (third party)
Another company a website contacts when you open it, for example to show ads, count visitors or load a script. That company learns your address and which page you are on.
6 of 12 checked provider home pages load advertising or analytics services.
- Partner link
A link to a provider that carries a code, so that the site receives a commission on a purchase. On this site such a link is labelled where it stands.
At present 0 providers are linked with a partner link.
- Pending
A location that has not been measured yet. Locations are measured in turn; a full round takes a few days.
1,009 of 1,115 measurable locations are pending.
- Probe
A computer in a known place that sends the measuring packets. The site uses public probes in many countries; each reply is kept with the probe's city, network and time.
106 locations have been measured so far.
- Renewal price
What a plan costs once the first term has ended, as far as the provider's pricing page states it.
The largest rise per month found is 274 %.
- Server list
The list of locations and servers a provider publishes for its apps or on its website. Everything the site states about a provider's locations starts from this list, unchanged.
The lists of 13 providers are read several times a day.
- Virtual location
A location whose server stands in another country than the one it is listed under. It hands out an address registered for the listed country. Some providers mark such locations in their list; others have no marker at all.
417 of 1,661 listed locations are marked virtual; 5 of 13 lists carry such a marker.
- VPN
A service that sends your traffic through an encrypted tunnel to one of its servers, so that the websites you visit see the server's address instead of yours. Your internet provider sees the tunnel but not what is inside; the VPN provider sees what your internet provider saw before.
The archive covers 13 VPN providers.
