How to read a VPN review on this site

A walk through a provider page: the at-a-glance figures, points for and against, prices, who is behind it, the website check, and the location table with measurements.

Key points

  • Each provider page is built from data, not opinions: the provider’s own server list, our measurements, its pricing page, its home page, and checked company facts.
  • “Points in favor” and “Points against” follow fixed rules that are the same for every provider. An affiliate link never changes them.
  • Apps, speed, and support are not tested. Use the refund period to test those yourself.

The parts of a provider page

  1. Summary: how many locations and countries the list names, whether it marks virtual locations, and what the measurements show.
  2. At a glance: price per month in the initial term and afterward, refund period, devices, website trackers, company seat, owner, and features the pricing page names.
  3. Points in favor, against, and worth knowing: sentences generated from the data by fixed rules.
  4. Prices: every plan as the pricing page states it, with the country it was requested from and the date.
  5. Who is behind it: company, seat, owner, audits, each with its source.
  6. Its own website: which other companies the home page loads.
  7. Locations: every country in the list, with the virtual marker, the network, and the measurement status.
  8. Questions about the provider: short answers built from the same figures.

How to read the status of a location

StatusWhat it meansWhat it does not mean
matches the countryno reply ruled the country out; one reply placed the server near itnot proof that the server is there
no conclusion possibleno probe was close enough to decidenot a warning
server outside the countryseveral probes replied too fast for the listed countrythe provider may mark it as virtual itself

Across all providers, the results look like this:

1,122
Measured locations by result
  • matches the country: 644 (57 %)
  • no conclusion possible: 346 (31 %)
  • server outside the country: 132 (12 %)

Not every provider can be measured

Some lists name no server addresses. Then nothing can be measured or assigned to a network, and the page says so. In this archive, 10 of 13 providers publish addresses that can be measured.

Measured locations that match their country, by provider

Share of measured locations with the status matches the country. Providers whose list names no addresses do not appear.

Missing facts are not bad facts

When the archive has not recorded something, for example an audit, the page says “not recorded”. That is different from “none”. Facts are checked by hand on the provider’s or owner’s own pages, with a link to each source.

Compare two providers: every provider page links to its comparisons, and the comparison page shows all providers side by side.
